Julie Taymor's "Across the Universe"
Just saw this movie, and I’m eager to hear what others thought.
I knew from the trailer that this would be a heavily stylized e Taymor isn’t subtle, and God bless her for may find her style over the top, but I love choreography, costumes, sets, etc. are just extreme eye-candy.Sure, there are a few groaner moments (the first chorus of “She’s so Heavy” comes to mind), but I was more often moved to near-tears than snorts.
Taymor uses characters (all named from Beatles songs) who suggest not only real-life countercultural figures, but also archetypes of style and certain e is clearly modeled after Janis Joplin, but she also represents the entire Haight-Ashbury flower power is Lennon-esque (more Julian than John) but also the quintessential British art student struggling to escape a life in the is alternately Kerouack and Ron Kovic.
Taymor did a pretty good job of fitting the Beatles’ songs to the narrative.A few felt forced, and occasionally a lyric will jump out as inappropriate, but this seems forgivable under the circumstances.
If the heavily stylized visuals you the wrong way, hopefully the musical performances will make up for it.I thought they were uniformly e were times when a song would start and I would suppress a moan (“I Wanna Hold Your Hand” as a heart-break ballad?) only to be completely won over seconds later.
I particularly enjoyed the understated, dry production of the songs – just voices and a few well-chosen instruments – it really let the rich tones of the instruments and voices shine.I thought the instrumental rendition of “Day in the Life” (played on solo electric guitar) was outstanding.“Because” was so beautiful it nearly made me tear small gripe I had was a tendency to have the singers drag behind the beat a bit – I don’t know if this was an attempt to make the songs sound conversational or more ‘meaningful,’ but once I noticed it, it started to grate on ly, it wasn’t until late in the film that I noticed this tendency.
This movie is definitely another case of Boomers celebrating themselves, but I thought the design, musical treatment and visual candy made it r to hear from others.
